Emibas Scania

Birgitta Grunde in Trelleborg pioneered the registration of Scanian emigrants already many years ago. The Scanian Genealogy Federation in collaboration with The Swedish Emigrant Institute in Växjö have supported the continuation of this work, and made the data available on electronic media and in user friendly tables. Currently, about 171,000 individuals from the Province of Scania from 1850-1900 have been registered. These data are also integrated in a national database that currently contain complete records from household examination rolls/clerical surveys and emigration rolls for about 0.95 million individuals. When completed, EMIBAS will contain data on 1.2 million persons. The Swedish Emigrant institute is in the process of preparing a CD-ROM edition of the material currently available in the EMIBAS database. In the meantime, you can submit an inquiry to EMIBAS by mail.

The EMIBAS database is based on data from clerical surveys and emigration records. If you already have this information about "your" emigrant", EMIBAS cannot help you further. However, if you know or think you know that a person emigrated, and you have lost track of him or her in the Swedish parishes, a search in EMIBAS can show you the persons last parish of residence before emigrating. With this information you can proceed to investigate the person using the church records. If you have all parish records concerning a Swedish emigrant, and you know his or her final destination - please let us know! We will then add this information to the EMIBAS database.

There is also a CD-ROM with a database called EMIGRANTEN, the Emigrant. This database contains police records from selected Swedish harbors, gathered on so called ship's lists of all emigrating individuals. Here you can find information on the port of departure, date and destination of the emigrant. We can also help you do a search in EMIGRANTEN, if you have not tried this option before.

To request a search in EMIBAS, please fill out the form below. Each request costs 20 SEK but for practical reasons there is a minimum charge of 50 SEK. All work, including database searches and handling of requests, is done by volunteers, so please be patient - delays may occur.  Den här e-postadressen är skyddad från spamrobotar, du måste ha Javascript aktiverat för att visa den is responsible for the EMIBAS Scania division.
